Stages 4 - 7

These are the strategies and knowledge stages for stages 4 - 7. Each stage shows what is to be taught and learnt. Use these to set sessions that give students opportunities to practise them until they master them.

What is a Fraction?

Multiply 2 digit numbers up to 100 and 3 by 2 digit numbers - the easy way

This is a really easy way to multiply 2 digit numbers, however it is essential that students understand the value of these numbers and place value before learning these tricks. This next video progresses from here to 3 digit by 2 digit multiplication.

6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables

This techniques includes the 9x tables, however I think the other one I put up is easier.

9 Times Tables

Here is a wee trick you might like to try. Makes learning the 9x tables so easy.

Making 10

I have found that numeracy is what a lot of children are feeling like they are failing so I will add a number of resources and ideas I use. One of the first things that students need to know is how to make 10. 10 is so important in maths and is the foundation that will enable them to understand what numbers mean. Always use materials first it helps the student to process the concept while manipulating the buttons, counters beans or what ever you use. This shows how I use making 10 to introduce the concept of 10. I have the strip of combinations on the desk for students to look at if they need to, it is not cheating they are memorising it. You can advance this strategy by making 20 or 30 etc. Next I would use this 10s frames to get the student to quickly and easily visualise the patterns that make 10. Tens Frames  Then you can use this video.
